im asking do they make this outrageous claims as part of attempt to attract new members?

Years ago information moved slower and a good clean-up campaign could usually outpace the scandal at hand.

Even if you took them to court, and won, what makes you think the lying cheats wouldn’t withhold or destroy anything incriminatory and then tell you what they do hand over is "all they have"?
They destroy documents from the mother ship all the time, especially if they are incriminating.

the friend asked my mom how i've been and my mom said she made a face and kind of went "ehhh..." and talked about my lack of meeting attendance (she doesn't know it's way more than that) and my friend shook her head and said, "aw, that's too bad, but i've been in ruts like that before" as though i'm just depressed and don't feel like going lately.

i knew a few jw children who were beaten by their parents for various non-performance issues e.g.
not remembering scriptures, not giving talks .... did this happen to you?.
No, unless you count browbeating.
I do know the group I grew up with had a bunch of nasty belt snapping bible beater parents though.
